A Advanced Astros to play in temporary home

The A Advanced affiliation of the Houston Astros in the Carolina League will play in a temporary home for the 2017 and 2018 season. Only after the 2018 season the team will move to a projected facility in Fayetteville.

The team will move to Jim Perry Stadium of the Campbell University Campus, home of the fighting Camels.

The Astros’ farm team will adopt the name Buies Creek Astros. Not original but since it is only temporary that the team will play in Jim Perry Stadium, you may expect that the team will adopt a different identity after the move to Fayetteville. One thing is sure, the name does not follow the trend of extreme monikers of late.

Jim Perry Stadium is named for the Cy Young Award winner (1970) who attended Campbell. The seating capacity is 670 but the total capacity  is 1,000 and will be expanded for the 2017 season.

The Astros used to play in Lancaster as the JetHawks but bought the Bakersfield Blaze in an orchestrated move by Minor League Baseball that moved the Blaze and the High Desert Mavericks (Texas Rangers) to the East Coast.

Today the Houston Astros revealed the logos, uniforms and plans for their newest affiliate in the Carolina League during a press conference at Campbell University’s Jim Perry Stadium, detailing the future of what will be their temporary affiliate in the Minors.

Buies Creek will wear standard white Astros uniforms at home and an orange top on the road. The logo is similar to the current Astros branding, with “BC” replacing the “H.”

General manager of the Greeneville Astros  in the Appalachian League, David Lane, had the task to find a suitable home for the Astros’ new Carolina League club. He said they chose Buies Creek based on proximity to Fayetteville and facility needs.

“Campbell was our top choice,” said Lane, who will now serve as GM of both Buies Creek and the Astros’ Rookie-level affiliate in Tennessee. “They have all the infrastructure we need as far as clubhouses, a nice field, the lights were up to code — everything is already there. It’s an easy plug and play, and it was a good process.”
