Overhaul expected in Marlins’ organization and Mattingly’s future with the Dodgers

Dodgers manager Don Mattingly

Don Mattingly’s future with the Dodgers is unclear. It may all depend on how the team with the biggest pay roll is finishing this season. Mattingly is generally know for making bad managerial decisions or just not seeing certain situations. Spicy detail is that the Dodgers hired former manager Ron Roenicke, who was fired by the Brewers early in the season, to be their new third base coach. The Dodgers were blaming the previous third base coach Lorenzo Buddy for the base running boners that the Dodgers made. So far the Dodgers have been one of the worst base running teams this season. Roenicke also has deep Dodger roots, so he would be a good fit to replace Mattingly. When the Dodgers announced that Mattingly would be the successor of Joe Torre, they let him manage the Phoenix Desert Dogs of the Arizona Fall League, to let him get some experience as a manager. So without a long career as a minor league manager, can you blame him that he makes mistakes?

You can wonder if the Dodgers hired Roenicke as insurance policy in case they will fire Mattingly. On the other hand, the Dodgers could also have been thinking ahead as rumors are swirling around that Mattingly is wanted by the Marlins.

Jeffrey Loria, the owner of the Fish, is eyeing Mattingly. Apparently he is not happy with the results of the Marlins with Dan Jennings at the helm of the team. Jennings was moved from the front office to the dugout after Loria fired Mike Redmond when he led the team to a 20-30 record, early in the season. Since Jennings is at the helm of the team, the results haven’t been significantly better: 35-49 since he took over.
Now Jennings has been asked to return to his former position as General Manager.

You can only wonder how long Mattingly will survive in Miami. If he keeps making the same mistakes as he does with the Dodgers, Loria may fire him in the blink of an eye. It remains to be seen if the Dodgers want to let Mattingly go, all depending on whether he can guide them far into the play offs and if he keeps making these mistakes. The question is if Mattingly wants to go to Miami.

If Mattingly can manage the Dodgers to another World Series win, he may get the benefit of the doubt for the 2016 season. But baseball is a stone cold business in which is no room for such sentiments. Hideki Matsui was the 2009 World Series MVP, but still the Yankees didn’t offer him a new contract. It is just the way it works.
