Dutch Hoofdklasse, Sunday May 10
On day three of round four, the following games were scheduled: Curacao Neptunus – Vaessen Pioniers; Pronto DSS – UVV; HCAW – Corendon Kinheim; L&D Amsterdam Pirates – Mampaey the Hawks.
The weather was great for a game of baseball.
Curacao Neptunus – Vaessen Pioniers 5 – 2
The game between two of the title favorites (at least on paper) went into the seventh inning without a run scored. But in the top of the seventh Pioniers put themselves on the boards as Quentin de Cuba drew a walk and stole second before he was driven in on a double down the left field line hit by Mark Jan Moorman. On a single by Kevin Weijgertse, Moorman moved to third only to score on a single by Daniel Fernandes. But Neptunus bounced back immediately. Singles by Adrian Anthony, Rien Vernooij and Gyenuar Lopez loaded the bases. Adrian Anthony scored on a fielder’s choice hit by Benjamin Dille before Raily Legito drove in Rien Vernooij for the second run with a single. In the eighth innning Neptunus scored three more runs to reach the final score of 5-2.
Kevin Kelly earned the win by pitching 1.1 innings in which he gave up one hit and struck out one. Sedley Karel took the loss for Pioniers. He gave up two runs on one hit, walked two in just 0,2 innings. Loek van Mil pitched a perfect ninth for the save. Best hitter for Vaessen Pioniers was Kevin Dirksen, who went 2 for 4 with a double, an RBI and a run scored. Shaldimar Daantji drew a walk and struck out once, but most of all he went 3 for 4 with an RBI, a run scored and a stolen base.
HCAW – Corendon Kinheim 2 – 6
Corendon Kinheim took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning. Kinheim’s big inning came in the fourth when Jeffrey Arends drew a leadoff walk followed by a double, hit by Bryan Engelhardt and a single hit by Dudley Leonora. That single of Leonora drove in Arends and Engelhardt moved to third. Consecutive singles by Sven van der Sanden and Jasper Keijzer drove in Engelhardt and Leonora to make it 4-0.
It took HCAW until the seventh inning to score a run. By then Kinheim already had a 6-0 lead. Jarreau Martina lead off in the seventh with a double to center field. Rikkert van Kempen moved Jarreau Martina to third and the latter scored on a throwing error by Bryan Engelhardt. Two innings later, HCAW had a huge opportunity to make it a game again when they loaded the bases. All they could do was scoring one run and Marciano Phlippi struck out for the second out and Jarreau Martina was caught in a 2-3-2 run down for the final out of the game.
David Bergman earned the win for Kinheim as he went seven innings. He gave up one run on eight hits. He struck out four and walked one. Maickel Rietel was tabbed with the loss. He lasted 4.2 innings. Of the five runs he allowed Kinheim to score, only three were earned. Rietel walked three and struck out three. HCAW committed five errors and Kinheim three.
