Yankees and Dutchies in Spring Training: Friday March 6

The Yankees beat the Phillies 4-1, but the thing far more important to me was that Didi Gregorius got his first basehit as a Yankee. Didi went 1 for 3 with an RBI double and struck out once. He also left two runners on base. Once again he showed some nice defense, with a similar play as two days ago.  Signature play? 😉
This Yankee team fielded what is expected to be their every day infield: Chase Headly (3B), Didi Gregorius (SS), Stephen Drew (2B) and Mark Teixeira (1B). Headly went 0 for 2, Drew got a  hit out of three at bats and Tex   went 1 for 2. Prospect Rob Refsnyder replaced Drew in the bottom of the fifth. He  made a few outs and got a single in his sole at bat. Next to that he drew a walk.

In the other game that the Yankees played, they faced the Pirates in Tampa.  Chris Capuano surrenderd two runs on  three hits in two innings and earned to loss. He did get zip run suport from the big guys Gardner, Ellsbury, McCann, Beltran and Rodriguez. Only Gardner and Ellsbury got a hit but didn’t drive in a run with it. Eventually the Pirates won 3-1.

Andrelton Simmons still didn’t play in the game between Washington and Atlanta. But the most surprising was that Spencer Kieboom entered the game in the  ninth. He didn’t get an at bat but he made fhe first out of the inning when  Mailex Smit of the Braves didn’t hit the ball properly. Kieboom threw the ball towards first for the first out.

Matt den Dekker replaced Curtis Granderson in the fifth inning.  He went 1 for 2 and drove in two runners with a double.

Shawn Zarraga entered the split squad game vs the Mariners in the game in the fifth inning. In his first plate appearance he drew a walk but in his second he hit an RBI single. Unfortunately he also hit into a double play once.  He also scored a run himself.
