2014 World Series: game 5

  vs

Game five was a copy of game one. Madison Bumgarner dominated the hitters of the Royals. The score was a bit different though. Bumgarner went the distance and allowed four hits and struck out eight for the win. With this outing he lowered his ERA for the World Series to a microscopic 0.56.

At the side of the Royals, James Shields did better than he did in game one. In six innings he allowed two runs on eight hits, struck out four and walked one.

Kelvin Herrera and Wade Davis both pitched one inning in the remainder of the game, though Herrera started the eighth inning and faced two batters before being pulled, and combined for three runs on four hits (one unearned).

Once again the Giants showed what small ball can lead to. In the second inning Hunter Pence got on base on a single and advanced to second base when Brandon Belt singled on a bunt. Both runners advanced one base on a fly out to center field  by Travis Ishikawa. Hunter Pence eventually scored the opening run on a 4-3 ground out by Brandon Crawford.

Two innings later, the Giants added another run to their score when Pablo Sandoval scored from second base on a soft linedrive to center field hit by Brandon Crawford.

The final blow for the Royals came in the eighth inning when Kelvin Herrera gave up bakc-to-back singles to Pablo Sandoval and Hunter Pence. Herrera was pulled in favour of Wade Davis. Davis managed to retire the first batter that he faced but then served a melon that was hit for a double by Juan Perez that drove in Pence and Sandoval. Perez’ double was only two feet shy of being a homerun. A throwing error by shortstop Alcides Escobar allowed Perez to advance to third base. A single by Brandon Crawford put the final score on the boards: 5-0 Giants.

To emphasize Bumgarner’s domination: Besides the four hits that he allowed, the Royals only got one runner in scoring position when Omar Infante doubled in the fifth inning.

Best hitter for the Giants was Travis Ishikawa, going 2 for 3, but hitter with the most impact was Brandon Crawford. He went 2 for 4 and drove in three of the five runs.

The circus is moving back to Kansas City for game six. The Royals are now in a must win situation and will probably send Yordano Ventura to the mound.
