2026 Belgian Division One: Match of The Day (July 11)
A game with a lot of runs between the Deurne Spartans that hosted the neighboring Borgerhout Squirrels. In a game between two teams of the top four in the standings, one would expect strong defense, but fact was that a total of six errors were committed.
Borgerhout Squirrels 10 – 12 Deurne Spartans
Early in the game, the Borgerhout Squirrels took a lead when they scored four runs in the first inning thanks to three singles and a triple. Spartans however came back in the bottom of the inning when the Spartans scored on a fielders choice and on a throwing error by the shortstop.
After scoring a run in each of the following two innings, the Squirrels took a 6-2 lead. But from there the Spartans’ bats woke up. A run in the third and two in the fourth, brought Deurne within a run from the Squirrels.
A four-run sixth inning gave Spartans the lead and they never looked back. With runners on the corners, Nando Mostaert singled through the left side to drive in two runs. Two fielding errors lead to two runs although Nando Mostart was driven in on a “hit” that preceded a fielding error.
Both teams continued to score as both scored three runs, Spartans in the bottom of the seventh inning and Squirrels in the top of the eighth, but Squirrels couldn’t get any closer.
As written before, six errors were committed; one by Spartans and five by the Squirrels. Despite committing five errors, only one run that Borgerhout allowed was unearned.
Nando Mostaert, who entered the game in the top of the third inning with two outs, earned the win. In 6.1 innings, he allowed four runs (three earned) on eight hits and a walk, as he struck out seven. Matzas Sirgedas took the loss as he allowed seven runs (six earned) on seven hits as he struck out three.
Nando Mostaert helped his own (pitching) case as he went 4 for 4 with four RBI and four runs scored.
