ABL Terminates License of Canberra Cavalry
A few months ago, the owners of the Canberra Cavalry announced to withdraw their team from the 2025/2026 Australian Baseball League as a result of an uncertain future due to the withdrawal of the Melbourne Aces and the Sydney Blue Sox (back then) having now owner. Now the ABL has terminated the license of the club, meaning that the owners have no right of running the team anymore.

The (former) owners of the club intended to pause the participation for the 2025/2026 season and to return in a restructured league in the 2026/2027 season, but the ABL had a different opinion on the matter.
As a result, the club’s website and social media channels will now be run by the league. According to the league, “The outgoing ownership group informed the ABL they were unable to commit to the 2025-26 season. The license was returned to the ABL, due to the Canberra Cavalry ownership group not meeting the conditions of the license. The ABL will consider all options in the 2026-27 season, including Canberra and other markets.”
As a result, the upcoming season will be played with only four teams: Sydney Blue Sox, Brisbane Bandits, Adelaide Giants, and (despite the announcement that the club has withdrawn from the upcoming season as well) the Perth Heat. Even though it is not announced in earlier news outings, likely the Heat will be run by the league.

One of the former owners of the Cavalry, Adrian Dart has stated that “all of the uncertainty about the league had driven the owner’s decision to withdraw from the season in the first place, [because] if it goes wrong, it would be the end of the Cavs forever”.
For now, the club is dormant, but likely, the ABL is looking for investors so the team can step into the 2026/2027 season again. Let’s hope there will be a six-team league again in October/November 2026, as the current four-team league is rather devaluated.
