2025 Belgian Division One: June 7, Match of The Day

With all the Baseball European Baseball Cup Baseball, the Dutch Baseball Hangout is paying attention to, one would forget there is a “normal” regular season going on in Belgium as well. Today, we pay attention to Merchtem Cats @ Phoenix Mont-Saint-Guibert.

Merchtem Cats 0 – 1 Phoenix Mont-Saint-Guibert

A game cannot be closer than this one. Phoenix Mont-Saint-Guibert needed one run to win the first game of the double header. It was a game in which not much happened offensive-wise. The sole run of the game was scored on a passed ball.

After two-and-a-half scoreless innings, Phoenix struck first. After two quick outs, Rusty Huber couldn’t get out of the inning without giving up a run. A single by Daan Kuenen, followed by a stolen base and a single by Chad Herrera, put runners on the corners. A passed ball allowed Chad Herrera to advance to second before Merchtem’s catcher couldn’t cling on to a pitch of Huber. As a result, Daan Kuenen scored the game winning run for Mont-Saint-Guibert.

Merchtem had a huge opportunity to tie the game in the eighth inning. With Tom Vanderborght on second base, Rusty Huber singled to center field. Normally a hit like that leads to an RBI but in this case Vanderborght was nailed at the plate with a throw from centerfield.

Timothy Brown earned the win for Mont-Saint-Guibert. In five innings, he allowed three hits and struck out five. Rusty Huber took the loss, despite pitching a complete game. In eight innings, he gave up the only (unearned) run of the game, allowed five hits and two walks, and struck out nine.

The best hitter for Phoenix Mont-Saint-Guibert was Chad Herrera, who went 3 for 4 but did not drive in a run or score himself.

The second game of the double header was also won by Phoenix Mont-Saint-Guibert. This time 2-1.
