Champion to Pull Out of Australian Baseball League For The 2025/2026 Season

At the end of April, the Melbourne Aces announced they will leave the ABL. As a result and due to an alleged departure of the Sydney Blue Sox, the Canberra Cavalry will withdraw from the upcoming ABL season.

It must be said that the departure of the Sydney Blue Sox appears to be fallse news, but the departure of the Melbourne Aces has influenced the ownership of the current ABL champions, the Canberra Cavalry, to withdraw from the 2025/2026 season.

The club states that there is a lot of uncertainty for the upcoming season with Melbourne and Sydney leaving. The club did not hand over its license as it plans to return to a new structure of the ABL.

The Canberra Cavalry owners are confident the club will survive after pulling out of the upcoming Australian Baseball League season. A brief social media statement on the Canberra Cavalry Facebook page has rocked the baseball world.

Cavalry co-owner Paul Kelly stated that he and fellow co-owner Adrian Dart opted to pull out to ensure the long-term viability of the club.

“The club needs to survive. The league has to change; there needs to be some clean air now. I’m committed to keeping the Cavalry alive. We are keen to be part of the future,” stated Kelly.

The Australian Baseball League on its turn, has posted a statement saying it was confident the ABL would go ahead this season and that a new owner could be found for the Sydney Blue Sox, disputing an assertion that Sydney had pulled out.

The ABL said in the statement that Adelaide, Brisbane, Perth, Sydney and a potential new owner have all stated their desire to play baseball this summer in at least a four-team format.

Within two months, the ABL came from being a six-team-league to become a four-team-league. And in the previous years, the Auckland Tuatara dropped out due to financial problems. As a result, the league ceased the activities of the Geelong Korea team, in order to get an even number of teams in the league.

Let’s keep our fingers crossed the league will survive.
