Jamie Verheyleweghen Retires After a Long Career
Yesterday, at the last day of the regular competition in the Belgian Division One, long time Belgian national team player Jamie Verheyleweghen played his last game of a career that brought him to several parts of Europe.
After he played for several national Belgian youth teams, Jamie made his debut in Division One in 2009.
After having played with the Royal Greys for two seasons in Division One, Jamie moved to Brasschaat Braves, where he played for three years, Jamie moved to UVV in Utrecht, the Netherlands. He spend three years with that club, hitting .280, .284, and .280 in three consecutive seasons. In 2016, Jamie moved to Oosterhout Twins, where he stayed for two years. With Twins, he batted .283 (2017) and .347 (2018). After manager Kevin Knollenburg announced to step down, Jamie decided to move back to Belgium and joined Brasschaat Braves again.
Jamie would stay with the Braves until the end of his career. In his final season, he batted a decent .300. Unfortunately, he wasn’t able to go out with a base hit but he managed to draw a walk in his final game.
During his career as an international, Jamie played European Championships in the Netherlands, Germany, the Czech Republic, Italy, and several other countries. He also was part of the Belgian squad that played at the 2018 Super Six Tournament.
Jamie told the Dutch Baseball Hangout that he will not play at a lower level. He will spend time with his family and he will continue to run his flourishing baseball school #1 hitting.
