Today, the Belgian Division one was plagued by inclement weather. Several games were rained out but the players of the Mortsel Stars and the Brasschaat Braves were no pussies, as they played on for nine innings. Here is a photo impression of the game.
Mortsel Stars 2 – 9 Brasschaat Braves
In rainy and chilly conditions, home plate umpire Jean-Paul Jacobs decided to play on, where other games were postponed. In the first inning, Brasschaat Braves took an early and slim lead. With two outs, Hunter Cooper doubled down the left field line, followed by an RBi single by Robin Roevens, who happened to be the starting pitcher for the Braves as well.
In the bottom of the third inning, the Braves started to walk away as they scored three runs. With a runner on first base, Jamie Verheyleweghen laid down a perfect bunt down the third base line which put runners on first and second. Hunter Cooper hit another double, this time to right-center field and drove in Raxon Martinez Miranda. Robin Roevens followed with a sac fly that drove in Jamie Verheyleweghen. Yves Poesmans then tried to stretch a triple into an inside the park home run, even though third base coach Kevin Peeters gave the stop sign. This resulted in Poesmans being tagged out at home plate.
After a one-run fourth inning, Brasschaat added four more runs to its total in the fifth inning. With the bases loaded, youngster Robbe de Boey doubled to left-center field and drove in Kelvin Delgado and Yves Poesmans. Jamie Verheylewegen followed with a single that scored Jasper van Velthoven and Robbe de Boey.
Eventually, in the sixth inning, Mortsel managed to get on the board. A fielding error by Brasschaat’s second baseman, allowed Shane van Elsacker to score the first run for the Stars. A fielding error by the shortstop allowed Arne van Royen to score the Stars’ second and final run of the game.
Robin Roevens pitched six solid innings in which he gave up two (unearned) runs on five hits and three walks for the win, as he struck out three. Lowie Helsen took the loss. In five innings, he allowed nine runs (six earned) on eleven hits and four walks, as he struck out two.
The best hitter for the Brasschaat Braves was Hunter Cooper, who went 3 for 5 with two doubles, two RBI and two runs scored.
