This series is inspired by the must read book “All Caps, Stories That Justify an Outrageous Hat Collection”by Craig Colby. Craig wrote this book about the many caps he has and the stories behind it. Anyhow, this series will be about the caps I own and the stories behind them.
In this episode of “Personal Stories About Ballcaps,” we pay attention to the former cap of the UCLA Bruins.
In 2016, my oldest daughter went to California to work as an Au-Pair. During the summer months, we would pay her a visit. In July, we traveled to LAX and picked her up at the address where she stayed. During this vacation, we did many things, but for my daughters, the main thing was shopping.
At one point, I decided to visit Jackie Robinson Stadium, home of the UCLA Bruins. We stayed at an aunt of my (now ex-) wife and she (the aunt) lives near the ballpark. So one afternoon, when my daughters, ex-wife, and her aunt went shopping again, I went to visit Jackie Robinson Stadium.
I did not really know what to expect, but as soon as I set foot in the ballpark, I fell in love with it. At that day, some baseball clinic for kids was going on.
Jackie Robinson is a nice and cosy ballpark with about 3,000 seats. It has the atmosphere of an old minor league ballpark.
The team that won the NCAA championsip in 2013, was celebrated all along. Murals and photos of the team were shown everywhere.

It wouldn’t be the only baseball trip I would make that vacation. In Las Vegas, I visited a game of the Las Vegas 51s at old Cashman Field. During that game, I met Roger Bernadina, player of the Dutch national team.
What I like about this former UCLA cap is the color and the golden B on the front, even though it resembles the Red Sox B. Perhaps another reason is that Jackie Robinson is one of my favorite baseball players.
I hope I can get the newest version, made by Nike, and with a new B that does not resemble the Red Sox B, one day too.
