Today, the final game of round three was played. Borgerhout Squirrels hosted neighbor Deurne Spartans but stayed at the wrong side of the score for the second day in a row.
Deurne Spartans 7 – 1 Borgerhout Squirrels
After yesterday’s wipeout, today’s game wasn’t much better for the Borgerhout Squirrels. By the time the Squirrels got on the board, the Deurne Spartans had a comfortable 6-0 lead. Not only were the Squirrels outscored, they were also outhit 11-5.
The Spartans opened the score in the first inning, when José Gregorio Pérez Silva struggled with his control. A bases-loaded HBP and a bases-loaded walk allowed the Spartans to take the lead. Also in the third inning, lack of control was the cause of the third run the Spartans scored when Nando Mostaert drew a bases-loaded walk.
In the sixth inning, a sac fly and a groundout drove in two more runs for Spartans. Deurne had a major opportunity in the seventh inning to blow the game wide open when it loaded the bases with no outs. Then Alexis Marquez singled to center field to drive in Nando Mostaert, but thanks to a fly out and a double play, the damage was limited.
Eventually, in the bottom of the seventh, Squirrels managed to get on the board. With Zion de Brauwer at second base, Cédric Vandesompele singled to right field to drive in De Brauwer for the Squirrels’ only run.
In the ninth, Spartans scored once more on a sac fly to left field.
Anderson Denny Gerdel Nieto pitched a complete game for the win. He allowed one run on five hits and struck out twelve. José Gregorio Pérez Silva took the loss. In six innings, he gave up five runs on five hits and eleven (!) walks and struck out five.
Johiner Alfonso Arguinzones Ocanto was the best hitter for Deurne Spartans, as he went 4 for 5 with two doubles and three runs scored.
Thanks to this victory, the Spartans share first place with the Hoboken Pioneers.
