2019 European Championship, day 8

On the eighth day, the following games were scheduled. Play downs: Croatia @ Great Britain. Consolation round: Belgium @ Czech Republic, Germany @ France. Semi-finals: Spain @ the Netherlands and Italy @ Israel.

Play downs:

 Great Britain  5  –  1  Croatia
A two-run first inning and a one-run second inning set the tone for the remainder of the game as Great Britain managed to stay in the European A poule. The two runs in the first inning were scored on a groundout and a throwing error when Jordan Serena stole third base. In the following innings, the British would score a run in the fourth inning and in the seventh. All Croatia could do was score one run in the second inning when Christopher Ciatti hit into a double play and drove in Andrija Tomic.
Michael Roth pitched five innings in relief for the win. He allowed two hits, walked one and struck out one.
Best hitter for the British was Jordan Serena who went 2 for 3 with two RBI and a run scored.

Consolation Round:

 Belgium  4  –  5  Czech Republic
A solo home run in the bottom of the eighth won it for the Czech Republic. With the game tied at four, Martin Muzik hit the ball to left center field where it cleared the fence.
It was a game in which both teams were each other’s match. The Czechs took a 4-0 lead by scoring a run in the second inning and three in the third. Belgium got back as it scored twice in the fourth and the fifth inning. Reliever Kenny van den Branden gave up the game-winning home run. Despite pitching only 0.1 innings, Marik Minarik earned the win. Daniel Padysak earned the save.

Spain    –    Kingdom of the Netherlands
Here is the link to the game report.

Italy  7  –  6  Israel Vlag van Israël
A bit of a seesaw score in a slugfest. Italy took a 4-0 lead in the third inning and appeared to walk away to an easy victory. But Israel bounced back and turned the tables. In the fourth inning, a solo home run by Daniel Valencia and a grand slam by Simon Rosenbaum gave Israel a 5-4 lead. Rob Paller’s home run in the sixth inning extended Israels lead to 6-4. But once again Italy proved that it ain’t over until it’s over. Homers by Chris Colabello and Alberto Mineo drove in three runs and put Italy in the driver’s seat.
Andrea Pizziconi earned the win. He pitched one perfect inning in relief. Alex Bassani pitched two innings for the save with one hit and a walk allowed and four strikeouts.
Federico Celli was the best hitter for Italy as he went 2 for 4 with an RBI and a run scored.

Italy will face the Kingdom of the Netherlands in the final tomorrow. It is the twenty-fifth time both countries will face each other in the final of the European championship. In sixteen of those finals, the Dutch prevailed.
