With an all-Austrian Federations Cup final, the question was which team would earn the promotion to the CEB cup. As the Vienna MetroStars beat the Dornbirn Indians in the opening game of the tournament 16-6, the expectation was that the team from the Austrian capital would win. Things would go a bit different though as the Indians beat the MetroStars 19-1.
As the Austrian baseball team managed to reach the A group of the European Championship, one can say that Austrian baseball is on the rise. The all-Austrian Federations Cup final proved it once more.
The Vienna MetroStars opened the score in the first inning when Dominik Löffler flied out to center field for a sac fly on which Alex Hillard scored the opening run.
An eleven-run second inning set the tone. The 2018 runner up of the Austrian championship series, Dornbirn Indians collected six hits and took advantage of two errors and two wild pitches to score eleven times.
In the following three innings the Dornbirn Indians scored eight more runs to end the game in five innings thanks to the mercy rule.
Not only were the MetroStars outscored 19-1 but also outhit 15-2.
Tyler Thompson earned his second win of the tournament as he pitched a five-inning complete game. He gave up one run on two hits and a walk as he struck out nine.
Thierry Letouze took the loss. The pitcher that also can play outfield, lasted only 1.2 innings in which he gave up nine runs, of which only one was earned, on five hits and a walk.
Catcher Paul Astl was the best hitter for the Dornbirn Indians as he went 3 for 3 with a double, a home run, five RBI and two runs scored.
