Dutch hoofdklasse 2018: Relegation group, round 2, day 1

In the relegation group, the first day of the second round was scheduled tonight. Cityside Apartments Quick Amersfoort was hosted by DSS and Meerlease Pioniers hosted Silicon Storks.
Cityside Apartments Quick Amersfoort 3 – 8 DSS
Only in the seventh and the eighth inning Quick Amersfoort could score some runs. In
the previous innings, their offense was kept on a leash by Sander Helmendach in this lopsided game.
Until that seventh inning, Helmendach limited Quick Amersfoort to two hits.
By the time Quick Amersfoort scored its first run, DSS had taken a commanding 7-0 lead.
Basehits by Tino van Erk (2 for 3), Denzel Richardson (2 for 5), Omar Williams (1 for 4), Koen Halderman (2 for 5), Devano Pieter (1 for 3), Kevin Nieveld (2 for 4) drove in seven
earned runs. No surprise Helmendach earned the win with one run allowed on five hits and two walks and nine strikeouts in seven innings. Brian van Laar lasted only 1.2 innings in which he gave up four runs (three earned) on three hits and four walks as he struck out one.
Silicon Storks 0 – 2 Meerlease Pioniers
In another close game, Lars Huijer went the distance and shutout Storks for the win.
In nine innings, he limited Storks to two hits, walked two and fanned eight. Lars needed 116 pitches to accomplish this feat. His opponent, Nick Winkel, pitched five solid innings in which he allowed only two hits before he gave up two runs to Pioniers. In the sixth he started well by striking out Mark Smit but then lost control. He gave up a single to Joey Eeman, then threw two wild pitches, walked three (one intentional) and then gave up another walk with the bases loaded. Damian Melis then singled to drive in Pioniers’ second run. In the eighth inning, Storks had the opportunity to get on the board as they loaded the bases but with two outs, Sergio Schoop struck out looking.
Pioniers collected only four hits but that was enough for the victory. Mark Smit went 1
for 3, Joey Eeman also went 1 for 3 as did Oliver Severino van der Wijst and Damian Melis went 1 for 4.
With this win, Pioniers walks away from Storks in the standings. Storks is still without a victory, Pioniers now has as many points as Quick Amersfoort: four. DSS is the only team without a loss.
