De Glaskoning Twins makes history
De Glaskoning Twins passed through the flames and rose from the ashes this weekend but eventually, the team clinched a spot in the playoffs of the Dutch hoofdklasse thanks to a 6-1 victory over Cityside Apartments Quick Amersfoort.
Almost it was a typical Twins game like they played in the past few weeks. An early lead, giving away the lead in the middle innings and a series of rallies in the final innings to clinch the win. Today the club took an early 1-0 lead when Jamie Verheyleweghen scored the opening run on Bob van der Meer’s single up the middle.

But unlike the other games, the team managed to keep the lead and even extended it a bit. In the fifth inning, Jamie Verheyleweghen scored from second base again, this time thanks to a single by Brian Biezen. Until that moment, Cityside Apartments Quick Amersfoort hardly was a threat mainly because of the great outing of starting pitcher Pastor Chavez Martinez. But once again, the 2-0 lead proved to be slim. In the sixth inning, Quick Amersfoort managed to cut Twins’ lead in half. Twins reacted quickly as Dennis de Quint connected for a solo shot to left field in the bottom of the sixth.
After ninety-six pitches, manager Kevin Knollenburg replaced Chavez Martinez with Reynaldo Sarmiento Clara. The reliever recorded the first out in the eighth inning but then struggled to find the strike zone. After two walks, he was replaced by Thijs Steenwijk. Steenwijk started with three consecutive balls but then recovered and retired the next two batters to get out of the inning without damage.
Much to the relief of the fans, Twins expanded their lead in the bottom of the eighth. With the bases loaded and two outs, Jamie Verheyleweghen connected for a double that landed in the gap of left-center field and drove in all runners for a 6-1 lead.
After Thijs Steenwijk recorded the final out of the game the emotional outburst was big.
