U15 World Cup 2018: Brazil beats Dutch in five
It didn’t quite go as planned for team Kingdom of the Netherlands. Perhaps the biggest unknown team of the tournament beat the Dutch team in five innings, 11-1.
After the first inning, in which the Brazilians took a 2-0 lead, it still looked like a game but after a seven-run second inning, the race was already run. A strong outing by Pedro Lemos Da Costa limited the Dutch lineup to one run on only three hits as he struck out seven batters.
Not only was the Dutch pitching in shambles, so was the defense. Three errors led to five unearned runs.
The one run the Dutch scored came in the third inning. Jesse Velders got on base thanks to an error by the Brazilian center fielder. He advanced to second base when Donovan Antonia drew a walk. A force out at second, hit by Gedionne Marlin made him advance to third base. With two outs, Darnel Collins singled to right field to drive in Velders.
Dorian Lippens, who replaced Yirzeel Burnet in the second inning, pitched the remainder of the mercy rule shortened game. After he gave up two more runs in the third inning, he kept Brazil from scoring in the fourth and the fifth.
The three hits, the Dutch collected were hit by Gedionne Marlin (1 for 2), Darnel Collins (1 for 2) and Karim Ayubi (also 1 for 2).
Today, the Dutch will play their final game of the tournament vs China that finished fifth with a 1-4 record in group A. Assuming the Dutch will win this game, the team will finish in eighth place.
