Haarlem Baseball Week 2018: Surprising win by Germany

Tonight, the Germans, who fell to the Kingdom of the Netherlands yesterday, stunted vs Cuba, the 25-time world champion. In a seesaw game, the Germans eventually prevailed as they clinched the surprising 5-4 win.

Germany took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning that lasted until the top of the second when the Cubans tied the game. In the bottom of the third, the Germans scored twice to regain the lead again. But once again Cuba would bounce back.

In the top of the fourth inning, Cuba scored three runs thanks to four hits and two errors. Talking about errors. Both teams played some sloppy defense as Cuba committed three errors and Germany six. Despite the six errors, the Cubans could not stay at the right side of the score.

But after Cuba took a 4-3 lead, Germany showed some flexibility. Two singles, a sac bunt, and a sac fly drove in the game-tying run for the Germans in the bottom of the fifth. Two innings later, Philip Schulz scored from third base when Maurice Wilhelm hit into a 4-6-3-2 double play.

Enorbel Marquez, who replaced André Hughes in the seventh, retired the side in the eighth but got himself into a mini jam in the ninth as he allowed runners in scoring position. Nevertheless, he managed to get out of the ninth inning without any damage.

Marquez earned the win after pitching three innings in which he gave up a hit, a walk and struck out three.

Max Boldt was the best hitter for the Germans as he went 3 for 4 with a double and an RBI.
