Dutch hoofdklasse 2018: Round 7, day 3
On the third day of round seven, De Glaskoning Twins headed to Amersfoort to take on Cityside Apartments Quick Amersfoort, HCAW hosted Hoofddorp Pioniers and Silicon Storks hosted DSS.
De Glaskoning Twins 3 – 7 Cityside Apartments Quick Amersfoort
It looks like De Glaskoning Twins has hit a speed bump. Until the series vs HCAW, the team played some solid baseball with good hitting and decent pitching. But since that series vs HCAW of which they won only one game, things have slowed down. Last Thursday the team never stood a chance vs Quick Amersfoort, yesterday Twins blew a 4-1 lead and finished the game with a 5-5 tie and today the team wasn’t a shimmer of its old self as well.
Starting pitcher Misja Harcksen was hit hard as he gave up six runs on nine hits and five walks in just four innings. His opponent on the mound, Colin van Laar kept Twins on a leash until the seventh inning. Twins only got on the board in the seventh when Brian Biezen hit a bases-clearing triple that drove in one run.
Despite Van Laar’s dominance, Twins still collected seven hits with him on the mound but those hits were too much spread out in the game, so Twins never really got dangerous. Eventually in the ninth, Twins scored twice to reach the final score.
Colin van Laar earned the win as he gave up only one run on seven hits and a walk as he struck out five in 6.2 innings. Misja Harcksen took the loss.
Best hitter for Cityside Apartments Quick Amersfoort was Joran Berkhout, who went 2 for 2.
Hoofddorp Pioniers 1 – 4 HCAW
No blowout victory for HCAW but a solid one. Hoofddorp Pioniers never came close to the victory as the team left only two runners on base throughout the whole game. In six of the nine innings, the team did not get a runner on base. Only in the fourth inning, Pioniers managed to get a runner on base but that was thanks to an HBP. Eventually the team scored a run in the sixth when Mervin Gario doubled down the left field line to drive in Mark Smit. With that run, Pioniers tied the game but one inning later, the HCAW offense rallied for three runs. With the bases loaded, Jeandro Tromp got on base thanks to a fielder’s choice but the Pioniers defense couldn’t record an out and allowed Roland Laurens to score the go-ahead run. Roelie Henrique then singled home Julian Rip and with the bases still loaded, Delano Selassa walked home Denzel Bryson.
Chris Pfau cruised through seven innings for the win as he gave up one run on two hits and a walk and fanned eleven. Dion Steijl lasted 6.1 innings in which he gave up four runs on eight hits as he struck out two.
Best hitter for HCAW was Roelie Henrique, who went 2 for 4 with an RBI.
DSS 4 – 3 Silicon Storks
A hard fought victory for DSS vs Silicon Storks that used its new acquirement, Juan Carlos Sulbaran, for the first time. But it was in a strange order though. Sulbaran pitched only two innings in which he gave up one run on two hits as he struck out one. Jurrian Koks took over in the third inning and hurled out the game.
After DSS took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning, Storks rallied for two runs in the bottom of that inning. But in the next two frames, DSS would score a run each to take the lead again.
Once more, Storks managed to tie the game. In the sixth inning with two outs and runners on first and second, Tyron de Wind singled to center field to drive in the tying run. But once more, DSS would take the lead. In the ninth, Koen Werkman hit a solo shot to center field and thus handed DSS the win.
Jurrian Koks took the loss as he gave up three runs (two earned) on seven hits and a walk and struck out six. Byron Cornelisse earned the win. He pitched 2.1 perfect innings in which he struck out two. Mike Groen earned the save.
Koen Werkman was the best hitter for DSS as he went 3 for 4 with a home run with an RBI and two runs scored.
