European Championship: Kingdom of the Netherlands wins nail biter

Afbeeldingsresultaat voor European Championship baseball 2016

Spain and the Netherlands played a mouthwatering game tonight. In a real pitching duel the runs did not come cheap. Quality pitching and quality defense were the recipe for a nail biter. In a game that was too close for comfort the Dutch stayed at the right side of the score and made a big step towards the final.

Kingdom of the Netherlands  1  –  0  Spain

For four innings both starting pitchers kept their opponents in check, but Dutch starter Shairon Martis and his opponent on the mound needed a lot of pitches to do so.
Both teams played defensive good baseball as neither team did not commit any error.

In the fifth inning the score was opened by the Dutch. With Dashenko Ricardo on first base, Dwayne Kemp laid down a bad bunt as the pitcher threw out Dashenko at second base. But Kemp advanced to third on Stijn van der Meer’s single down the right field line and scored on Christopher Garia’s sacrifice fly to right field.

In the meantime Shairon Martis was masterful and cruised through the first seven innings as he limited the Spaniards to six hits and struck out one batter.

Set up man Tom de Blok then came into the game in relief and retired the side in a magnificent way, two strikouts and a 6-3 ground out.

Loek van Mil then shut the door in the ninth by retiring the side with a pop up to the shortstop, a 4-3 groundout with an exclamation point and a strike out.

The Spanish team contains a lot of players from South and Central America of which quite some have played at AAA level. So taking this into consideration the Dutch played a very good game against another quality team.

Shairon Martis earned the win and Ricardo Hernandez took the loss. The latter pitched 4.2 innings and gave up one run on five hits. He walked one and struck out two.

Best hitter for the Kingdom of the Netherlands was Yurendell de Caster who went 3 for 4. He was responsible for almost half of the Dutch basehits.

The Dutch need one more win to make it to the final. Tomorrow they will take another quality team in Italy. Spain will face the Czech Republic.
