U21 World Cup: Dutch still without a win

Once again the Dutch U21 squad played a good game, but once again they blew it in one inning. For five and a half innings the Dutch trailed; first 1-0, from the fourth with 3-0. But this time they had the flexibility to get back in to the game.

In the bottom of the sixth the Dutch got on the board when Dudley Leonora tried to lay down a lead off bunt. The ball went straight to the pitcher who committed a throwing error on which Leonora advanced to second and even to third on the error. Leonora scored an unearned run when the Venezuelan catcher let a ball pass.

In the seventh the Dutch scored another unearned run when Jules Peters (with runners on first and second) hit the ball towards first base and the Venezuelan first baseman wanted to turn a double play. But he made a throwing error which allowed Peters to reach first base on the fielders choice. Daniel Fernandes advanced to second base and moved to third on the error as Entwin Reigina (yes a pitcher… But he pinch ran for Jorin van Amstel) scored the second run for the Dutch. A sacrifice fly by Kirvin Moesquit drove in Daniel Fernandes for the game tier.

But in the ninth things went wrong for the Dutch. Maikel Rietel who had entered in the seventh and cruised through the eighth inning, got into trouble in the final inning. He started by giving up a walk. Then he registered an out when the Venezuelans dropped a sac bunt (1-4). Rietel then threw a wild pitch that put the runner on third. Unfortunately for Ritel, his field didn’t support him either. A fly ball was dropped by the Dutch center fielder and from that moment on the Dutch couldn’t keep the Venezuelans from scoring three more runs for the 6-3 win.

Too bad that one bad inning ruined it again for these kids. Once again they played a good game. Once again I think that they could leave the field with their heads up.

Maikel Rietel took the loss. In 2.2 innings he allowed three runs (of which only one earned) on two hits. He walked two and threw two wild pitches.
