Hoofdklasse Runner Up competition: Sunday August 23
On the final day of round two of the Runner Up competition, the following games were scheduled:
Pronto DSS @ Mampaey the Hawks and UVV @ HCAW.
It was a surprising day to put it mildly.
Pronto DSS @ Mampaey the Hawks 1 – 3
For two innings, DSS pitcher Mark van Deursen kept the Hawks in check rather well. But in the third he started the inning by giving up a double to Kevin van Veen, who drove the ball to righ center field. Amir Daou grounded out to first base and Kevin van Veen could advance to third on the play. Van Veen eventually scored when Odion Gouverneur drove the ball to shortstop Tommy van der Sanden, who committed an error.
Van der Sanden didn’t have his day as he committed a throwing error in the bottom of the fifth on which lead off hitter Julian Goins advanced to second. Goins advanced to third on the 4-3 ground out hit by Kevin van Veen. A wild pitch by Kevin Geestman (who replaced Mark van Deursen in the fourth inning) allowed Julian Goins to score the second run of the game.
With one out in the sixth inning, Tim Roodenburg drew a walk and stole second before he could advance to third base on a single by Julian Goins. When Kevin van Veen singled through the right side of the infield, Roodenburg could score the third run for the Hawks.
And what did DSS do in return? Not much. Only in the ninth they managed to score a run: Mark Smit got on base thanks to a dropped fly ball by center fielder Jules Peters. Smit could advance to second on the error and even advanced to third. When Max Ploegstra singled to right center field, Smit scored the consoling run for DSS. Then Quinn Tramm was replaced by Enoch Deaton who retired three batters in a row for the save.
Quinn Tramm earned the win as he went eight innings and faced two hitters in the ninth. He gave up one run on five hits, walked three and struck out three as well.
Mark van Deursen took the loss. In three innings he gave up one run on three hits and struck out one.
Julian Goins was the best hitter for the Hawks as he went 3 for 4 with run scored. Kevin van Veen had the most impact though as he went 2 for 4 with an RBI and a run scored. Mark Smit was the best hitter for DSS. He went 2 for 1 with a double and a run scored.
This was a very valuable win for Mampaey the Hawks. Now they will face HCAW in the next round to decide who will face Twins from Oosterhout (who has won the Overgangsklasse championship) and play for demotion.
DSS has secured another year in the Hoofdklasse with yesterday’s victory. Not bad for a team that debuted in the Hoofdklasse this year.
UVV @ HCAW 1 -11
Maickel Rietel and the relievers of HCAW pitched a gem today. In eight innings they limited UVV to one run on nine hits. UVV scored that run in the fourth, to cut HCAW’s lead in half. HCAW had scored two runs in the previous inning.
But in the fifth inning, HCAW stepped on it. Emersson Paula led off the inning with a single towards the shortstop. After Jurjen van Zijl was replaced by Gillian van Lith on the mound, Paula advanced to second base on a balk and advanced to third on Jelle Blaauw’s ground out to first base. After Roy Seltenrijch grounded out 6-4, Rossini Frolijk drew a walk to put runners on the corners. A wild pitch by Van Lith allowed Paula to score and Frolijk to advance to second. After Kevin Nieveld drew a walk, Jarreau Martina homered to left field and took Nieveld and Frolijk with him.
In the next innings HCAW would score five more runs (two in the sixth, two in the seventh and one in the eighth).
As you may understand, Maickel Rietel earned the win. In six innings he gave up one run on five hits. He walked as many as he struck out: five. Gijs van Els en Steven van Groningen pitched two innings in total in which both gave up two runs.
Best hitter for HCAW was Jarreau Martina, who went 4 for 4 with a homerun, four runs batted in and a two runs scored.
Dennis Ribbens went 1 for 3 for UVV.
For HCAW this was also a crucial win. They will face the Hawks to decide who will play demotion games vs Twins from Oosterhout. It remains exciting until the end.
