Yanks sign Headly to four year deal. Another mysterious move by Cashman ?
The Yankees reportedly signed Chase Headly to a four year deal worth a bit North of $50 million, as MLB.com stated. Sure the guy wanted to play in New York and it is good to have a player aboard that really wants to play with your team, but I still don’t understand this move. Why spend a ton of money on a third baseman while you have third base covered already?
Overall, Headly hit .243 and .262 with the Yankees. On the defensive side he posted a .986 fielding percentage at third base with the Yankees and .975 overall.
The guy the Yankees already had on board, Martin Prado, hit .282 overall and .316 with the Yankees. At third base, Prado had a fielding precentage of .955 for the season and .967 with the Yankees.
I realize that defensive is important, but the Yankees couldn’t hit water when they fell out of a boat last season. When I take that into consideration, I prefer Prado over Headly.
Both players are versatile. Headly can also play first base, while Prado can play at second and in the outfield as well.
Now the deal with Headly is sealed, I think that Prado will be used as a utility infielder.
