Dutchies in the MLB playoffs: ALDS game 2
vs
What a game it was. Game two of the ALDS between the Tigers and the Orioles.
The O’s took a 2-0 lead after Jonathan Schoop got on base on the first single for Baltimore in the bottom of the third. Nick Markakis took Schoop with him when he hit a homerun. At least, that was what the umpires thought first. But Brad Ausmus requested an instant replay because the ball bounced back into the field. But a review showed that the ball had hit the top of the outfield wall.
Wei-Yin Chen cruised through the first three innings but got into trouble in the fourth. A single, a double, another single, a homerun by J.D. Martinez and a solo shot by Nick Castellanos, gave the Tigers a 5-2 lead.
Kevin Gausman, who got into the game in relief, got some help from his field in the fifth inning when Ryan Flaherty dived and stretched for the ball hit by Miguel Cabrera and threw it from his knees to Jonathan Schoop who fired the ball towards first for the double play. But the O’s didn’t give up. A basehit by Adam Jones followed by a soft ground out dribbler by Nelson Cruz, advanced Jones to second base. J.J. Hardy hit a soft linedrive to left field that gave Jones the opportunity to score Baltimore’s third run.
In the sixth inning, Justin Verlander was replaced by Anibal Sanchez. It wasn’t trouble rightaway, but there was some bad news coming up.
In the top of the eighth Detroit scored another run to make it 6-3.
Joba Chamberlain replaced Sanchez in the eighth. After a HBP and a single, Steve Pearce singled home the fourth run for the Orioles. Brad Ausmus brought in Joakim Soria in relief for Joba Chamberlain. But Soria walked the first batter that he faced to load the bases. Then Buck Showalter made a smart move by letting Delmon Young pinch hit. Young’s legacy is one of being a dangerous hitter in October. And he proved it once again. With the bases loaded he hit a double towards left field off Joakim Soria and drove in three runs to give Baltimore the lead.
Eventually, Zach Britton closed out the game for a 7-6 come back from behind victory for Baltimore. The O’s are now one win away from clinching a spot in the ALCS.
Jonathan Schoop had four plate appearances. He got one single and drew a walk thus contributing again to the O’s victory.
