European Cup 2014: Results of Day Seven

On day seven of the tournament, the Duch clinched a playoff spot by beating the French team 14-5.

Sweden earned it’s first win of the tournament by beating Greece 2-0. Both teams are tied for last place in the relegation group.  Sweden scored twice in the first inning and their  SP Joakim Klasson kept the Greek team at three hits. In nine innings he walked one and struck out four.

Croatia was beaten by Great Britain by 9 runs to 0. The British used three pitchers that combined for fourteen strikeouts (ten by SP Jacob Esch, who pitched seven perfect innings). The British gave up one walk and one hit.

Another close game for the Spanish. This time they stayed at the right side of the score.  Germany took a 2-0 lead in the fourth and in the top of the fifth even a 3-0 lead. In the bottom of the fifth Spain got on the board with a run.  Germany’s Luke Sommer pitched three scoreless innings, but in the eigth inning he could only get one out and allowed two runs. Eventually Enorbel Marquez relaced Summer and allowed another run. This was too much to overcome for the Germans who lost 4-3.

Italy took on European Cup host Czech Republic. The Italians opened the score in the first inning when Juan Carlos Infante scored on a sac fly. In the third inning Jan Novak couldn’t get out of the inning and Italy scored three more runs. Novak was replaced by Jakub Toufar but he allowed two runs (Novak was accounted for one of them) in the third as well.  The Azzurri scored another run in the fourth inning and two more in the eighth.
The Czech Republic had a huge opportunity to get back in the game in the fifth inning. Martin Cervenka scored from third on a single by Matej Hejma. Jakub Sladek singled to load the bases with two outs but Jakub Malik grounded out 6-3 for the final out of the inning.
The Czechs were not able to get back in the game and lost eventually 9-1.
