Roger Bernadina finds a new team

Curaçao native Roger Bernadina has found a new club in an independent circuit in Japan. Bernadina joined the Ishikawa Million Stars of the independent BC League (Baseball Challenge League).

Team emblemThe BC League started to play in 2007 as the Hokushinestu Baseball Challenge League. The Ishikawa MillionStars are one of the four charter teams of the league, next to the Niigata Albirex Baseball Club, the Shinano Grandserows, and the Toyama Thunderbirds.

Currently, the league contains ten teams and two divisions, the Future East Division and the Advanced West Division.

After two seasons with the Kia Tigers, Roger Bernadina wasn’t offered a new contract by Gerelateerde afbeeldingthe Korean team and had to look for a new squad. After no news at all, the news about his signing was published on the website of the MillionStars recently.

The 34-year old Bernadina will wear uniform number 55 and will play at his natural position in the outfield.

After playing (parts of) seven seasons in the Bigs, Bernadina moved to Korea in 2017 to join the Kia Tigers and helped the team to win the KBO championship that season. Even though his numbers slipped a bit in 2018, they were still pretty solid. But nevertheless, the Tigers decided not to offer Roger a new contract.

Who did expect, the former MLB player would go independent in Japan? An independent team in the United States would have been more likely, a team in the Atlantic League or the CanAm League for example. Perhaps, Bernadina will manage to attract the attention of an NPB team or KBO team.

A big shoutout to one of my Twitter contacts @rainichi_bball who made me aware of this news.
