In today’s episode of “Transactions in Belgian Baseball For The 2022 Season.” we pay attention to the Ghent Knights.
After the sad news about the Antwerp Eagles, it is time for some positive notes.
The Ghent Knights did not lose any players… but it did not sign any new ones either.
This means that the club will continue with the very same roster it ended the 2021 campaign with. The club will also not acquire any foreign player.
In 2021 the team didn’t make the playoff round (the Division 1 Gold) but played its games in the Division 1 Silver League. Normally the team would have played to avoid a demotion but because there were only eleven clubs last season, no team could be demoted.
The Knights ended in fourth place with a 2 – 6 record, one game ahead of the Antwerp Eagles.
There will be one change though. With the departure of head coach Pieter Stragier, the club had to look for a new head coach. They found one in the person of first starting pitcher Robin Meuris, who will fill the role as player/coach. With 14 players, the roster of the Knights looks rather thin but almost each of those 14 players can play multiple positions.
The roster that will defend the colors of the Knights in 2022, will look as follows:
Pitchers:
Robin Meuris (LF, CF, 1B)
Aaron Meert (3B, C)
Viktor Van De Velde (RF, SS, 2B, 3B, C)
Bram Hoflack (RF)
Björn Wollaert (1B, 2B)
Catchers:
Loic Daoudi (3B, SS)
Jens Arens (LF, CF, RF)
Infielders:
Sam de Meyer (1B, SS)
Erik Callewaert (2B, 1B)
Tim Hoflack (SS)
Yannick De Deyne (2B, 3B)
Outfielders:
Florian Baudé (CF)
Carlos Theus (LF, CF)
Maurits De Clercq (LF, RF)
I would like to thank chairman Kevin DeVos of the Ghent Knights for the information he provided.
