In the fifth episode of “Transactions in Belgian Baseball For The 2022 Season,” we pay attention to the Deurne Spartans. Not many acquisitions (so far) but a surprising new head coach for sure.

At the end of last season, three of the core players of Deurne Spartans decided to hang up their spikes: Morris De Vriendt, Gino Jonis, Sharlon LeBacks, and Luis Valdez.
If the “loss” of the aforementioned three players wasn’t bad enough, Andres de la Rosa decided to return to the Liège Rebels, which is more practical for him, since he is living in Liège.
So in general, the club lost five players. So far, the Spartans have managed to get one in return. Leonel Reina Viant is supposed to return after playing one season with the Brussels Kangaroos.
It remains to be seen if the two Venezuelan players Anderson Gerdel and David Ochoa Blanco will join the club. Last season, these two could not join due to the corona virus.
But perhaps the most surprising move of the Spartans is the signing of a new head coach. A name that will be well known by the Dutch baseball fans for sure: Orlando Stewart will be at the helm of the club for the 2022 season. The Curaçao-born pitcher had a lengthy career in which he played for Giants (Diemen), HCAW (Bussum) ADO (The Hague), and Sparta (Rotterdam).
If there will be more transactions for Spartans, you will read it here.
