Dutch hoofdklasse 2019: Round 9, day 2/3
For some teams today was the third round already as the games of Curaçao Neptunus and L&D Amsterdam Pirates were moved forward because both teams will play in the European Champions Cup next week. As a result, Oosterhout Twins and HCAW also played their third game of the weekend today. Other games that were scheduled were Meerlease Pioniers vs Quick Amersfoort and Silicon Storks @ DSS.
Silicon Storks 3 – 4 DSS
A close game in Haarlem as DSS handed Silicon Storks its twenty-second loss of the season. Sure Storks had its opportunities to score more runs than they did. In the first inning for example, the team scored the opening run on a single by Kris Morris through the left side. But a moment earlier, the team blew a big chance when it had runners in scoring position. When Glennton Poulo hit to the pitcher, Giovanny Perez dashed home instead of staying put at third, which resulted in him being tagged out at home plate.
In the sixth, Storks had a runner in scoring position again but then Juan Carlos Sulbaran denied Storks to score as he recorded the final two outs of the inning. DSS on its turn also had some scoring opportunities but took more advantage. In the second inning thanks to the long ball hit by Ibrahin Redan, who drove in two, in the fourth thanks to a triple by Tommy van de Sanden and a single by Leandro Anasagasti as they scored twice.
Juan Carlos Sulbaran, who pitched five innings in relief, earned the win. He gave up one run on five hits and a walk and fanned eight. Sem Lauf, who lasted 6.1 innings took the loss. He was tabbed for all the runs DSS scored as he allowed eight hits and a walk and struck out seven.
Meerlease Pioniers 10 – 1 Quick Amersfoort
Defensively, it was a disastrous game for Quick Amersfoort, as the team committed seven errors. As a result, Meerlease Pioniers scored eight runs of which six were unearned. Despite scoring ten times, Pioniers needed nine innings to finish the job. Lars Broersen allowed the only run to Quick in the third inning when Joran Berkhout singled to right center field to drive in Jules Cremer. But for the rest, Quick’s lineup was limited to seven hits; normally enough to score at least two runs but this time the hits were spread out over the game. Even though Pioniers scored five more runs after that inning, their biggest inning was in the third. Three singles, a double, two errors and some aggressive base running led to four runs.
Lars Broersen earned the win after pitching five innings in which he gave up a run on five hits and two walks as the struck out two. Sem Robberse pitched six innings but did not get the needed support of his defense as he allowed eight runs (three earned) on eleven hits and struck out six.
Tyler Boersma was the best hitter for Meerlease Pioniers as he went 4 for 5 with a double, two RBI and two runs scored.
Curaçao Neptunus 3 – 0 Oosterhout Twins
Today, Misja Harcksen proved once more that Oosterhout Twins is missing him dearly. At the mound for Netpunus, he limited Twins to two hits as he struck out six and walked two. Japanese import Yuto Onodera pitched six decent innings for Twins but had to surrender three runs on six hits and a walk as he struck out three.
Onodera’s successor, Nick Veale, faced three batters of which two reached base on a single. With one out, Veale was replaced by Stefan Ianelli, who is finally back after a nagging injury. Ianelli got out of the inning without further problems. Harcksen’s successor, Brendan Schoemaker was also practically unhittable as he allowed one hit over three innings. No surprise that Misja Harcksen earned the win. Kevin Kelly gave up a single in the ninth but retired the other three batters he faced for the save.
Yuto Onodera took the loss.
Best hitter for Curaçao Neptunus was hired gun Willie Johnson, who went 2 for 3 with a double and a run scored.
L&D Amsterdam – HCAW
After a hard-fought win yesterday, L&D Amsterdam Pirates seemed to have a walkover today in Bussum. but in the end, HCAW came pretty close. Former Pirate, Dennis Burgersdijk, normally a solid pitcher, was roughed up as Pirates took a comfortable 6-1 lead after four innings. But Nick Veltkamp, who pitched five solid innings, got into trouble in the sixth. Veltkamp allowed HCAW to get Oliver van der Wijst to third base, from which he scored when Ruendrick Piternella hit into a forceout at second base. Veltkamp then was replaced by Jeremyh Angela, who didn’t fare better as he walked the only hitter he faced with the bases loaded. Mike Groen took over and got out of the inning. Joan Rifaela allowed the fourth and final run to HCAW in the ninth as Norbert Jongerius scored from third base on a forceout at second, hit by Regainel Martis.
Nick Veltkamp earned the win after 5.2 innings as he allowed three runs on four hits and seven (!) walks and one strikeout. Dennis Burgersdijk took the loss. In four innings he gave up six runs (four earned) on six hits and three walks as he struck out five.
Sharlon Schoop was the best hitter for L&D Amsterdam Pirates as he went 2 for 3 with a run scored and two walks drawn.
