In their first game of the 2018 Haarlem Baseball Week, team Kingdom of the Netherlands did not have much trouble with their German opponent. Three Dutch pitchers combined for a 6-0 shutout and limited the Germans to three hits.
After Japan beat Italy 1-0 in the opening game, the Dutch had it much easier against their opponent. Runs in the first, fourth, seventh, eighth and ninth inning led to a regular win.
Kingdom of the Netherlands took a 1-0 lead on a solo home run by Dwayne Kemp in the first inning. After two scoreless innings, The Dutch extended their lead by two runs. With the bases loaded, Remco Draijer ht a sac fly to right field to drive in Gianison Boekhoudt. When the Dutch executed a double steal, Gilmer Lampe could score from third base on a throwing error by catcher Vincent Ahrens.
A bases-loaded walk in the seventh led to another run. In the eighth, Denzel Richardson scored after he doubled down the left field line, advanced to third on a groundout and was driven in on Max Clarijs’ sac fly to right field. The final run of the game was scored in the ninth by Dwayne Kemp, who scored on Gilmer Lampe’s double up the middle.
The Dutch pitching was dominant. Orlando Yntema pitched seven innings in which he gave up a hit and a walk and struck out six. His successor, Kevin Heijstek, gave up two hits and fanned one in one inning. Mike Bolsenbroek pitched against the players he faces almost evers week in the German competition. Bolsenbroek pitched a perfect ninth in which he struck out one.
Average-wise, Max Clarijs was the best hitter as he went 1 for 1 with an RBI and a run scored. Gilmer Lampe had the most impact as he went 1 for 2 with a double and two RBI.
