Dutch hoofdklasse 2018: Round 4, day 1
On the first day of the fourth round, Curaçao Neptunus hosted De Glaskoning Twins, HCAW hosted DSS, Cityside Apartments Quick Amersfoort headed to Hoofddorp to face Pioniers and L&D Amsterdam Pirates hosted Silicon Storks.
De Glaskoning Twins 2 – 8 Curaçao Neptunus
De Glaskoning Twins took a bold 2-0 lead in the first inning. With two outs and Sam
Kennelly at first base, Dennis de Quint tripled into the gap in right-center field to drive in Kennelly. De Quint would score on a wild pitch.
But Twins could not enjoy the lead for long. Starter Pastor Chavez Martinez gave up a single and a walk to the first two hitters of Curaçao Neptunus and threw a wild pitch that allowed both Benjamin Dille and Stijn van der Meer to advance a base. Van der Meer scored on Gianison Boekhoudt’s groundout and Dudley Leonora drove in Benjamin Dille for the game-tying run. With a bases-clearing triple in the second inning and two RBI-singles in the second inning, Neptunus took the lead and never looked back. Twins had a good shot at making it a game again in the sixth inning with runners on first and second and no outs. But after Jarreau Martina was caught stealing at third base, Sam Kennelly hit into an inning-ending double play. Twins collected 10 hit compared to the 12 of Neptunus. Normally a team should be able to score more runs but except the two they scored in the first inning, they blew several scoring opportunities. Eventually, Diegomar Markwell earned the win. In five innings he gave up two runs (one
earned) on five hits as he struck out two. Pastor Chavez Martinez took the loss. In five innings, he gave up seven runs (six earned) on nine hits and a walk as he struck out three.
Best hitter for Curaçao Neptunus was Gianison Boekhoudt who went 2 for 4 with a double and three RBI.
DSS 0 – 3 HCAW
In a very quick game (two hours and nine minutes) with not many runs and hits, HCAW stayed at the right side of the score. Vince
Rooi singled in the first inning with the bases loaded to drive in the opening run. Bryce Cherry followed with a sac fly to drive in Delano Selassa. Three innings later, Bryce Cherry would score himself on a single down the left field line hit by Julian Goins.
Dennis Burgersdijk, who was used as a reliever by L&D Amsterdam Pirates in the previous years, pitched eight shutout innings in a solid game in which he gave up only three hits and struck out nine for the win as he retired the side in five of the eight innings he pitched.
Timo van Ancum earned the save. The loss went to Sander Helmendach. With three runs (one earned) on three hits, he put up numbers that could normally earn a pitcher the win.
Best hitter for HCAW was Vince Rooi, who went 2 for 4 with an RBI and a run scored.
Cityside Apartments Quick Amersfoort 3 – 3 Hoofddorp Pioniers
After Hoofddorp Pioniers had taken a 3-1 lead in the fifth inning it looked like they
would hang on the lead with Lars Huijer on the mound. Huijer limited Cityside Apartments Quick Amersfoort to one run until the sixth inning. But out of the blue, with two outs, Quick managed to score twice in the sixth. Tijmen Takke singled, followed by a double hit by Jules Cremer on which Takke could cut Pioniers’ lead in half. When Remian Denis singled to right-center field, Cremer could score the game-tying run.
As none of the teams managed to score in the remainder of the game, not even in the tenth, after which the game was called due to the curfrew rule, the game ended in a 3-3
tie. Lars Huijer pitched 7.1 innings and gave up earned runs on five hits and three walks as he fanned eight. His opponent, Luis Figuera lasted five innings and gave up as many runs on as many hits and as many walks as he struck out two.
Best hitter for Hoofddorp Pioniers was Leandro Anasagasti, going 2 for 4 with one RBI. Jules Cremer was the best hitter for Cityside Apartments Quick Amersfoort as he went 2 for 4 as well. But Cremer hit a double, drove in a run an scored once himself.
Silicon Storks 0 – 4 L&D Amsterdam Pirates
Tonight’s game was one of many missed scoring opportunities for L&D Amsterdam
Pirates. On the other hand, Kevin Heijstek was nearly unhittable. Despite scoring two runs in the second inning, the game stayed close thanks to the big number of runners left on base until the sixth inning. Pirates had several opportunities to score with runners on third and second but failed to do so. It took them until the sixth inning to extend the score. In the sixth, Kenny Berkenbosch drew a walk, advanced to second on Linoy Croes’ single and scored when Rashid Gerard singled through the left side. One inning later the team scored once more to make it 4-0.
In the meantime, Kevin Heijstek cruised through seven shutout innings in which he fanned seven, walked two and gave up just one hit for the win.
Eduardo Guerra took the loss. In three innings, he gave up two unearned runs on two hits and a walk and struck out one.
Best hitter for L&D Amsterdam Pirates was Niels van Weert, who went 2 for 4 with a double and a run scored.
