U18 World Cup 2017: Dutch fall to Taiwan in consolation round

The Kingdom of the Netherlands had to swallow a loss vs Taiwan after wins vs Mexico (in the first round) and Nicaragua (in the consolation round). Some sloppy defense cost the Dutch the game as they fell to Taiwan 4-1.

It took the Dutch until the fourth inning to get on the board. In the previous innings, neither team had scored. Despite two errors, starting pitcher Luuk ter Beek managed to keep the Taiwanese from scoring in those four frames with the help of a couple of double plays.

So in the fourth inning, the Dutch took a 1-0 lead on a solo home, hit by Enrique Hatma,  that just stayed on the right side (the left side that is) of the right field foul pole. But after that solo shot, things went completely wrong for the Dutch in the top of the sixth inning.  After a solo home run by Li Yu-Chuan, Taiwan scored two more (unearned) runs on two errors committed by the Dutch defense.

After Li Yu-Chuan led off with a single in the seventh inning, Luuk ter Beek was replaced by Lars Vogelaar. Lars kept the Taiwanese from scoring in the seventh inning, but had to surrender a run in the eighth inning.

That error laden fifth inning was the death blow for the Kingdom of the Netherlands. In the following innings, the team never got past second base. In the ninth frame, Chen Bo-Hao struck out the side for the save.

Luuk ter Beek took the loss despite six solid innings

It must have been a bitter pill to swallow for Luuk ter Beek as he pitched a stellar game in which he gave up only one earned run. But due to the lack of defensive support, he had to take the loss with three runs allowed on five hits. Luuk walked two and struck out five. Lars Vogelaar also pitched three decent innings despite he had to give up one run on three hits. He didn’t walk a batter and struck out one.

Tommy van de Sanden and Enrique Hatma both went 1 for 3, with a walk. Hatma hit a solo home run so he was credited for the RBI.

Other hitting results:

Denzel Bryson: 1 for 5
Makesiondon Kelkboom: 1 for 5 with a double
Delano Selassa: 1 for 5

Thanks to this loss, the best position in the final standings the Dutch can get is the eighth place. To achieve that, the team has to beat its eternal arch rival Italy later today.

In the super round, Canada pulled off an upset by beating Japan 6-4. Today the Japanese will take on Korea for a spot in final, where the unbeaten team USA will be the opponent.
