Two minor leagues cancel championship series due to Irma

Both the Florida State League and the Southern League have announced to cancel their championship series due to the upcoming hurricane Irma. Irma will likely hit Florida on Sunday.

The Florida State League announced that the winners of both Division Series will be declared co-champions. As the Dunedin Blue Jays won the North Division by beating the Tampa Yankees in three games (8-6 loss, 5-3 win and 4-1 win) and the Palm Beach Cardinals beat the Fort Myers Miracle in two games (both 3-2 wins), the Blue Jays and the Cardinals both celebrated the FSL championship.

“Safety is our first concern for our players and staff,” said Carson. “After consulting with the Major League Clubs of the participating teams, it was unanimously decided this was the proper thing to do.”

The Southern League announced the cancellation of its championships series on Thursday. With one team located in a city that is in the path of the hurricane, the Southern League does not want to take any risk. The three home games of the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp will be moved to Pensacola, the opponent of Jacksonville.

“With an abundance of caution, I have made the hard decision to cancel our Championship Series,” stated league president Lori Webb. “Due to concerns for our players’ safety, coupled with potential shortages of gas, hotel rooms and other items that may hinder the many evacuees leaving the affected area, it seemed like the right thing to do. As this storm passes through, I hope for the best to all those in harm’s way.”

The North Divisional Series of the Southern League is played by the Chattanooga Lookouts, winners of both halves of the season and therefore the team has a four game home advantage and the Montgomery Biscuits. Both teams have won a game so far.

In the South Division, the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp and the Pensacola Blue Wahoos are facing each other. As Jacksonville won the second half, the team has a three game “home advantage” in Pensacola. Currently, the Pensacola Blue Wahoos are leading two games to none.

It has happened before that the Southern League and the Florida State League declared two teams co-champions.
