The Mississippi Braves have placed Curacao born infielder Ozhaino Albies on the 7-Day disabled list.
In a game that went all but well for the M-Braves, Albies left after apparently injuring his right forearm after a swing. In the sixth inning of the Mississippi Braves’ playoff game against the Pensacola Blue Wahoos, Ozzie took a swing on a ball that was in on his hands. Immediately following the swing, he grabbed his arm.
Two blown saves, three late errors (leading to four unearned runs for the Blue Wahoos) and a bases loaded walk off walk given up by Braves’ pitcher Caleb Dirks handed the 6-5 win to Pensacola.
Albies went 0 for 2 with a strikeout and a fly out. Game reports and injury reports do not tell what kind of injury Albies has incurred. After that swing in the sixth, Albies grabbed his forearm.
Between Triple-A Gwinnett and Double-A Mississippi this season, Albies posted a combined batting average of .292 with 33 doubles, 10 triples, six homers and 53 RBI. In 82 games with the Double-A farm team of the Braves this season, Albies had a .321 average with 22 doubles, seven triples, four homers and 33 RBI; numbers that were good enough to claim the Southern League Batting crown. Albies is tagged as the “Best Infield Arm” among Braves minor leaguers.
Since there is only a 7-Day disabled list in the minors, it remains unclear how severe this injury is. The apparent injury will postpone a possible September call up to the Bigs and perhaps it may even block his promotion to Atlanta this year. Some comments on Reddit stated that Albies was quite ticked off, so the injury may be serious.
Here is footage of the freak accident.
[EDIT] In the meantime the Braves have announced that Albies has injured his elbow. Early indication is Albies did not incur any ligament damage, but there is a chance he may have fractured his elbow.
