Trevor Hoffman to join UK WBC staff

And now for something completely different.

This time no news about players from the Netherlands, Curacao or Aruba, nor about the Minor Leagues or the Yankees.

With the World Baseball Classic Qualifier 4 (in Brooklyn NY) getting near rapidly, the Twitter account of the WBC (retweet) and the website of UK Baseball announced that former San Diego Padres and Milwaukee Brewers closer Trevor Hoffman will join the staff of team Great Britain.
Hoffman will serve as the team’s bullpen coach. Hoffman’s mother was English so the choice for that team is logical.

Hoffman broke into the Majors with the Florida Marlins in 1993 shortly owned the MLB record of most saves with 601. Later that record was beaten by Mariano Rivera of the Yankees.
As a college player Hoffman played as a shortstop but he struggled at the plate and was converted into a pitcher because he was able to throw 95 mph. Halfway the 1993 season, Hoffman was traded to the Padres in exchange for Gary Sheffield. In 1994, his first season as the Padres closer, he recorded 20 saves.

Great Britain will participate in the World Baseball Classic Qualifier 4, that will be played from September22 through September 25 at MCU Park, home of the New York Mets A Short Season affiliate Brooklyn Cyclones. With the backdrop of Coney Island, team Great Britain will take on Brazil (that qualified for the 2013 WBC), Pakistan and Israel.
